About CNRS

The CNRS currently employs 11,600 scientists (15% of them non French) and 14,400 engineers and support staff, making it France’s largest research institution, both a research operator and a research-funding agency.
CNRS carries out research in all areas of science, technology and society through its ten institutes, two of which have the status of national institutes:
  • Institute of Chemistry (INC)
  • Institute of Ecology and Environment (INEE)
  • Institute of Physics (INP)
  • National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (IN2P3)
  • Institute of Biological Sciences (INSB)
  • Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (INSHS)
  • Institute for Computer Sciences (INS2I)
  • Institute for Engineering and Systems Sciences (INSIS)
  • Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INSMI)
  • National Institute for Earth Sciences and Astronomy (INSU)
Its overall budget amounts to close to 3.3 billion €.

The CNRS is very active internationally, with :
85 exchange agreements (with 60 countries)
5,000 foreign visiting scientists (PhD students, post-docs and visiting researchers)
8 CNRS offices abroad (Beijing, Brussels, Hanoi, Johannesburg, Moscow, Santiago de Chile, Tokyo, Washington)
